Baytex sailing transportable bases: Modular, container-mounted team facilities
Baytex’s sailing transportable bases are purpose-built, container-mounted clearspan structures designed for world-class sailing teams to use as mobile headquarters, workshops, and hospitality spaces that can be rapidly deployed and relocated between international race venues. Engineered with single or double 20-ft shipping containers acting as both ballast and storage, these bases minimise on-site labour and eliminate the need for permanent foundations, allowing teams to erect or dismantle each facility in a matter of hours and stow them within their own transport containers for seamless logistics. All bases are designed to meet diverse building-code requirements and withstand varied environmental conditions, providing secure office, workshop, and equipment storage areas in a flexible, reusable format.
Sail GP Mobile Workshops
We were approached by our existing client to look at redesigning our 18m wide x 25m long sailing base workshop. This was to enable the racing boat platform to be lifted higher in the workshop space for safer installation of the dagger board foils and the foiled rudders. A redesign of this nature is not totally out of our comfort zone, but the extent of the changes and strict engineering requirements really pushed our design teams thinking process to its limit. Exploring the world of digital printing on PVC to present the sailing teams brand was real triumph which sets the scene for the workshop complex.
2024 Americas Cup - Orient Express Racing

Orient Express Racing made contact with Baytex in the later part of 2023 to commission a sailing base to house their new race boat for preparation of the 2024 America's Cup Racing Series. Early via conference meetings showed that our 22mx45m Alimax would be their preferred size. Several critical issues arose during these meetings around the entry opening height to accommodate their mobile boat cradle. These issues were resolved very quickly with some innovative engineering solutions. The other area of concern for the client was how we were to lift the boat into the roof space. Baytex set about designing a custom two-way gantry system set up inside the tent which means they can lift the foils in independantly of the hull. The use of a high lift roof foil bay allows the team to test the foil arm actuation through it's full action. A mezzanine sail loft floor was custom designed with access stairs, boat platform loading gate as well as rear wall louvres to control air flow in the hot Barcelona summers. A Serge Ferrari blockout PVC was also utilised to control the heat within the space.
2021 Americas Cup - NZ - Luna Rossa

Baytex was the main contractor to manage and build the Luna Rossa base for America's Cup 2021. This 40mx40m deployable fabric structure was their Boat Workshop and also required was a 20mx40m hospitality base. These were fully fitted out.
Following America's Cup Baytex was contracted to dismantle the Luna Rossa Base.
2021 Americas Cup - NZ - American Magic
American Magic
An AC72 18mx45m single container is to house, maintain and work on their training boat ‘The mule’ in Portland, and prove the design before embarking on final preparation of their AC75 race boat for the 2020 Americas Cup in Auckland. Using our curved Tension Purlins we designed a new system so the mono-hull mule could be lifted into the additional roof space and the canting dagger boards could be articulated.
2017 Americas Cup - Bermuda - Team NZ
Emirates Team New Zealand
Emirates Team NZ AC72 (22m wide x45m long & 22m wide x40m long) purchased from Baytex for the San Francisco AC campaign was refurbished with new PVC, rebranded and the hospitality entrance was developed. The team also refurbished their AC45 base extending it from its original format of 18mx25m to 18mx40m creating a team office and caferia complex.
2017 Americas Cup - Bermuda - Team Japan
Softbank Team Japan
We produced a 34mx30m Arched Truss tensioned membrane building 7m high for Softbank Team Japan with two separate working areas. The building is designed as a permanent facility, is fully transportable and can be packed into 4 shipping containers and reinstalled at the next location.
Team Japan also required a 12mx15m Alispan office/hospitality facility to compliment the main base.
2013 Americas Cup - San Francisco
Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa
These impressive 22m wide by 75m long container structures were created to house the 72ft catamarans and their 41m wing sail. The structures are double container mounted, attached to ground foundations, with the containers acting as a partial ballast, storage and transportation to port venues around the world.
2012 AC45 World Racing Series
AC45 Team Bases
The Alimaxs were a mixture of 12m and 18m wide structures in lengths ranging up to 25m all designed to be container mounted with the containers acting as ballast, storage and service spaces for each of the teams. The structures were designed for quick and easy set-up and dismantling for storage in their own transport containers for shipment between each of the race venues. The Alimax included storage, workshop and office space.
2011 Volvo Ocean Race
Emirates Team New Zealand
Using our Alimax container structure we created two transportable 18mx18m bases for Emirates Team NZ. Each base travelled ahead of the other to be set up in the next port for next racing stop over port. The bases housed a sail-loft, a rigging container, an office, a cafeteria and a hardware repair and painting booth.
