Project Purpose
The objective of this project was to design and create a free-standing contemporary covered fabric canopy for the Papamoa Blocks Incorporation office. The client's request specifically emphasised the need for the canopy to visually represent the base of a whale's tail, in keeping with the local legend of Mangatawa. The design also needed to incorporate a 5-metre custom-made Māori carving by a local artist, symbolising cultural significance.

Unique Aspects
The project is rooted in the unique story behind Mangatawa, which reflects indigenous Māori culture and local mythology. According to the legend, a whale and her baby became stranded in the mudflats of Rangataua, turning to stone. The design of the canopy symbolises this connection, echoing the shape of a whale’s tail while honoring the historical narrative.
Story Summary: Long ago, the mother and baby whale ventured into Tauranga Harbour, eventually getting lost and stranded. They turned to stone by the magic spring, leaving a poignant representation of their journey, which becomes a central theme in the design.

Project Complexity
The project's complexity arose from the need to merge architectural design with cultural storytelling, ensuring that the structure remains both functional and symbolic. The incorporation of the custom Māori carving as part of the design adds a layer of artistic intricacy, demanding collaboration with local artists and careful attention to detail.

Results
The project was completed successfully, with the following outcomes:
  • Client Satisfaction: The clients and iwi were very impressed with the speed, efficiency, and overall quality of the finished canopy.
  • Installation Timeline: Baytex took the project from concept to full installation within a challenging timeframe, demonstrating the capacity to deliver under pressure.
  • Community Engagement: The canopy’s design resonated well with the local community, reinforcing cultural heritage and connections to the land.

Additional Features
In addition to the canopied entrance, Baytex was tasked with conceptualising an interior water feature for the main office. This feature, composed of large stainless steel and glass, ties back to the Indigenous legend, particularly reflecting the magical spring known as 'Te Waiu o te tohora', which symbolises the milk of the mother whale.

Project Summary
Overall, the project has significantly impressed both the client and the iwi. The timely design, completion, and installation of the entry canopy showcased Baytex's commitment to quality and respect for cultural narratives, resulting in a strong partnership and a shared vision that has become a landmark feature in Mangatawa.
