The Pop-up Opera Theatre

Baytex helps to bring art to the masses

Baytex have again showed-off their wares as a world-leading designer and manufacturer of Fabric Structures with the latest custom project to leave their production floor, the captivating ‘Pop-up’ Opera Theatre.

The Pop-up Opera Theatre was made for the Hong Kong based Foundation for the Arts and Music in Asia (FAMA) and their partners, The Link, as part of their mission to bring the arts into the community and to make the art of opera accessible to all.  The Pop-up Opera Theatre will be screening, free of charge and for the first time in Hong Kong, The Traviata Story, one of the most popular operas of all time, by legendary composer, Giuseppe Verdi.

The Pop-up Opera Theatre will be located at a number of popular Hong Kong shopping malls throughout the coming months.  “By taking the Pop-Up Performance Tent to the local community, rather than expecting the local community to come to the performing arts, the Pop-Up Opera Tent provides a new venue for exposure of Hong Kong’s arts community” said Mr. Laurence Scofield, Chairman and Founder of FAMA.  "It is drawing huge numbers of ordinary, everyday people who come to experience opera, usually for the first time."

The luxurious and completely unique Pop-up Opera Theatre is stunning to look at from the outside and really creates an atmosphere and setting inside befitting of such a great opera.  This custom designed Alispan structure measures 10m x 9m with a 6m tall back wall sloping to 3m at the front, to give it a ‘real’ theatre feel.  It is mounted on a heavy-duty integrated floor system that supplies the bulk of the ballast weight.  The structure features double walls for superior acoustics and is made from Ferrari 702 PVC that has been fully digitally printed with an eye-catching deep red theatre curtain finish.  Fully engineered to meet the very stringent Hong Kong building code the Pop-up Opera Theatre is fully air conditioned and holds a 6-metre cinema screen and comfortable seating for 40 viewers.

Once again, it’s another Baytex Fabric Structure success story.  We are all very proud of this one.
